Coaching career

Tuskegee Institute

Van Cleve was the ninth head coach for the Tuskegee University Golden Tigers located in Tuskegee, Alabama and he held that position for nine seasons, from 1955 until 1963. His coaching record at Tuskegee was 42 wins, 35 losses, and 5 ties. As of the conclusion of the 2007 season, this ranks him fifth at Tuskegee in total wins and 11th at Tuskegee in winning percentage (.543). [1]

Alabama State

Van Cleve became the 15th head coach at Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama starting the 1964 season, and he remained there for the next five seasons. He posted a record of 35 wins, 14 losses, and 1 tie with an impressive win/loss percentage of 0.71000—the highest win percentage at the school as of completion of the 2009 season.[2]

Hampton

Van Cleve ended his coaching career as the 13th head coach at Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia. Unlike his success at Alabama State, Van Cleve posted a disappointing record of 3 wins, 45 losses, and 1 tie with a win percentage of 0.07143 after five seasons to be the worst-performing coach at the school as of the end of the 2009 season.[3]
